CHARACTER INFORMATION
Name: Asura
Canon: Onmyoji
Canon point: Post-betrayal/death, prior to escaping the abyss
Age: Unknown. He's a semi-immortal half-celestial, half-demon. We can safely presume he is older than 16.
History: The world Asura was born into was one ravaged by war, a centuries long territory struggle between Celestials and Demons. The Celestials had spoiled their ancestral home of Trayastrimsa, leaving them refugees in the land of Demons where they built a glittering castle and waged war to carve out a new place to call their own. The Demons fought back, and the entire realm has a bloody battleground since.
Growing up in a small village to a single mother, he was mercilessly bullied and beaten by the other children due to the fact his powers had not manifested. He cried to his mother often. Eventually their village was attacked by demons, and they tried to capture Asura's mother. In his distress, he finally awoke his powers. With his powers, however, came a wild, uncontrollable rage. He manifested his spiritual essence as whip-like blades, laying waste to his entire village. The invaders, the villagers, his mother alike. No one was spared.
Asura lived with the madness into adulthood. He would attack indiscriminately, slaughtering both Demons and Celestials alike. It was not until he met Taishakuten that he even dreamed of feeling peace. Taishakuten's powers were empathy based and unsuited for the battlefield, but in Asura he too found a purpose. He could calm Asura, direct him, subdue him, and together they became unstoppable.
Almost.
But the rich and privileged have a way of ruining everything. They destroyed Trayastimsa, and they had no intention of learning from their mistakes because that would mean giving up their power. They planned to use Asura to turn the tide of the war, then oust him with the damning truth that he was not truly one of them. Asura was oblivious, single-minded in his devotion to ending the war and ushering an era of peace and unity. Taishakuten, however, knew better.
From Asura's perspective, Taishakuten turned on him swiftly, without warning, and could not be reasoned with. Taishakuten sided with the Deca, the council of Celestials led by their Emperor, for the backing and resources they had to offer. Asura could not, would not cooperate with that and they went their separate ways. Asura stayed on the front lines, gathered his troops, and planned to attack the capital.
When the time finally came, Taishakuten met Asura at the gates. Though Asura expected a fight, Taishakuten told him someone was there who wanted to see him and stepped aside to reveal Asura's mother. Asura saw demons about to attack her and ran for her to protect her, shielding her body with his.
This turned out only to be an illusion. Taishakuten slid a knife into his stomach, then cast him into the Abyss, sealing him in an impenetrable prison. It was from there that Asura heard of Taishakuten's increasing sins. That Taishakuten was crowned Emperor, that he created the Ten Precepts, that he had made the realm above one of sterile, merciless order.
Once again, Asura bided his time, gathered his army, and prepared to march upon the Heavens.
Suitability: His canon has so much blood, gore, and body horror. People eat people in the Abyss and become amalgams of their victims just to start with. Also the multitude of eyes on Asura's Manifestation is exaggerated but Taishakuten really does have approximately ten times more eyes than he should.
Is this a re-app? No
Inventory: Asura isn't a material possessions kinda guy. He doesn't even have pockets.
Powers, abilities and/or inhuman traits:
Inhuman traits:
Asura's spiritual essence manifests extensions of his body he is able to shapeshift at will, though most often they appear as bladed tentacle-like whips. They have also appeared as large, disembodied hands and additional arms wielding swords. With them comes berserker rage which Asura is unable to control. When under the effects of his madness, he is unable to stop fighting even when fatally wounded and he cannot differentiate between friend and foe.
Rather than a flesh and blood heart, what lies in Asura's chest is a kokorodama or Locus. It is the core of his life force and he cannot truly die while it is intact. He can be incapacitated and weakened to a death-like state, but will recovered unless his Locus is removed or destroyed.
Asura also possesses a spiritual 'third eye' which—when open—can see through illusions.
Powers:
Besides being sharp-and-pointy-things based, Asura's powers are largely fire-based. Game mechanics translated into functional roleplay powers are as follows.
Flames of Perdition (紅蓮誅灰)
Asura attacks a single target. If the target dies, they are immolated and their ashes grant Asura a sharp increase in physical power.
Weight of Temptation (天魔威圧)
With each target Asura engages in battle with, his sanity degrades. When Asura dips below max sanity, he becomes immune to status alterations such as confusion, sleep, slow, and anything else meant to hinder or restrain him. As his sanity degrades, he gains strength in direct proportion to sanity lost.
Endless Slaughter (無間殺戮)
This takes effect whenever Asura attempts to take an action with less than full sanity. He will manifest his spiritual essence as a sword and attack a random target, then will summon a rain of swords upon everyone in his vicinity. After this action, Asura will regain a portion of his sanity. If Taishakuten is present, Asura will regain over half of his maximum sanity.
Infernal Slaughter (煉獄虐殺)
When Asura either puts himself or finds himself behind enemy lines, he summons a giant hand to attack all targets, then singles out one of the targets to continue to strike with each strike consuming part of his sanity. He continues his assault until his sanity depletes entirely.
Abilities:
Character flaws/traumas:
Manifestation name: Benevolent King
Character traits the Manifestation reflects: His regret surrounding what became of Taishakuten, a constant reminder of the monster his only friend became and how helpless he was to stop it. Beautiful and terrible exemplifies the tyrant his friend is now. The eyes on the creature are a constant judgment, and the very fact of its existence, present and irredeemable, dangles what he desires most just out of his reach. That it forces and entraps bystanders in their fight is a direct trigger for Asura's madness, and the direct proximity of what is almost, almost Taishakuten but not quite putting all who interact with Asura at risk is all the worst parts of his former life and it's hunting him for sport.
Description: A slender, elegant shape of a man with pale skin, shimmering a delicate gold. It has no features, only a smooth, untextured surface.
Instead of a man's head, it has a large lotus blossom which, when bloomed, has a bright red mouth lined with rows and rows of razor teeth. Each of its joints are lanced through with gold puppet strings, and it moves as the strings pull it forward in sharp, jerking motions. The only sound it makes is quiet, mocking laughter that surrounds you, seeming to come from all angles.
When it spots prey, dozens of vertical eye slits split open all over its skin, all pupils trained upon its target.
Attacks and behavior: If there are others in an area, the Benevolent King will prioritize targets that are not Asura, focusing on Asura only if he is alone or all others are either ensnared or incapacitated.
The Benevolent King has one primary mode of attack. Puppet strings will erupt from its hands towards the target, and if they make contact they will do one of two things: it will either use the strings to control the target to attack Asura, or the strings will dissolve only for the target to feel an uncomfortable, burning sensation at the wound site. The burning sensation is followed by gold lotus blossoms growing out of the wound, wherever the wound happens to be. Their roots run deep.
Secondary is the gaping maw. It will grind and mangle given the opportunity.
Corpses at the Benevolent King's feet also become host to its lotus blooms.
Path towards resolution: Asura has a lot of stupid ideas about what he needs to move on, and honestly in canon he's more or less decided he's not going to. He is a means to an end, and he's enough of a muscle head that he hasn't thought about what he's going to do once he achieves his goal. Like, at all. He lives pretty in the moment, and he is almost immune to the haunting implications of being hunted by a monster that represents all the worst parts of the only love he's ever felt in his adult life. The Benevolent King will serve as a constant, agonizing reminder of everything that's gone wrong in his life and everything he's been helpless to even stem the tide of, forget stop, but he is missing both key information and the required critical thinking skills to disengage from his traumas without significant therapy.
